Winter 2019 President's Letter

2018.  WOW!  What a year!  What began as a fresh start turned into such a blur that it's hard to believe the year is already over!  Thankfully, though, we have so much to look back on in 2018 and many proud moments for IREM San Joaquin Chapter 85.  The 1st Quarter brought us our 6th Annual Bakersfield Real Estate Forecast Breakfast, which again brought together the elite industry experts of the local real estate community for a morning full of informative and enlightening presentations.  With a packed room and many local dignitaries in attendance, our expert speakers advised us to expect great things from the Bakersfield and greater Kern County real estate markets and, looking back a year later, they were right!

The early months of the year also brought us the opportunity to participate in the 1st Annual Kern County Career Expo organized by the Kern High School District.  Held at the Bakersfield Convention Center, more than 6,000 high school students were in attendance, and IREM Chapter 85 gained considerable exposure.  It was a fantastic opportunity to reach out to the community and advance the profession of real estate management!

Springtime brought us many great luncheon speakers and networking mixers and a memorable trip to the IREM Super Regional Conference in Scottsdale, AZ in March!  As our membership continued to grow and our events continued to welcome new faces, we jumped into the summer months with new plans and ambitions for when the Chapter resumed events in the Fall.  Our Annual Industry Partner Tradeshow in September was another great success that brought all of our amazing IREM Industry Partners to the spotlight and gave them the opportunity to showcase their companies and services.  The Annual Holiday Luncheon in December brought in a record number in attendance, and we were able to supply the Jamison Center and the Bakersfield Homeless Center with substantial donations in both cash and toys/gifts.  All this was possible thanks to the generosity and care for the community of our valued IREM Members and Industry Partners.

Unfortunately, 2018 also brought challenges and sorrow, as we experienced the sudden loss of one of our long-time Board members and Treasurer/IAE, Cheryl Ann Brudvig, CPM.  While her passing left a huge hole in our Board and necessitated considerable effort to fulfill her responsibilities, it also left considerable sorrow for many of us who considered her a close friend, colleague, and member of our IREM Family.  Fortunately, our amazing Board members rose to the challenge and we were able to assume Cheryl's regular Treasurer duties relatively quickly and keep our Chapter operating efficiently for the benefit of our Members.  Special thanks and appreciation go to Nan Brown, CPM, of Realty Management Services for stepping to the plate and taking on the role of Treasurer/IAE and assisting us with this transition.  THANK YOU!

Looking forward to 2019, we are as ambitious and excited as ever to provide our Members and the community with engaging and educational programs, enjoyable networking events, and continuing to advance the highest ethical standards in the real estate management industry.  Our Executive Board Members Jessica Krausgrill, Victoria Eccleston and Nan Brown will be attending the 2019 Pacific Rim Forum in Santa Barbara in February.  The Pacific Rim Forum brings together our entire Region 11 Chapter Leaders from California and Hawaii to collaborate and advance our Chapters.  It is always a fun and educational event and we are so proud to be a part of such a vibrant and active Region!

Don't miss our upcoming Luncheon on February 27th, featuring the City of Bakersfield Solid Waste Division.  While most may not pay close attention to refuse and recycling programs, property managers are constantly facing the challenge of controlling operating costs while complying with State and local regulations dictating recycling programs and implementing proper waste management practices.  Every property manager will benefit from this presentation that is crafted directly to those who manage facilities impacted by these regulations.  Don't miss it!  More news and updates to come soon!
