Winter 2018 President's Letter

Dear IREM Members, Colleagues and Supporters:

It is with great pleasure and anticipation that I step into the role of President of San Joaquin Chapter 85 for 2018-2019.  My two years of service under Immediate Past President Kem Thurman has been and incredible journey and I cannot wait to fully immerse myself into the Chapter and grow its potential over the next two years.

In October 2017, Kem Thurman and I attended the IREM Global Summit in Chicago, IL, and there is just not enough time to describe what an amazing experience it was.  Not only did Kem accept the IREM Foundation Award for Greatest Percentage of Member Giving (thanks to the generous donations of our members!), we both attended multiple educational sessions regarding Chapter leadership and organization and met with our National leaders.  We even had a private tour of the IREM Headquarters offices!  One of the greatest benefits to serving as a Chapter President is the ability to attend the National and Regional IREM Conferences, and I highly encourage you all to consider attending future conferences and volunteering for a Chapter leadership position.

Also in the 4th quarter, our Holiday Luncheon held on December 6th had a fantastic turnout.  Thank you to everyone who attended, brought raffle prizes, and contributed to our donations to the Jamison Children’s Center and Christmas for Seniors.  IREM Chapter 85 made a huge impact on these organizations and the individuals they serve, which is what the Holidays are all about.  Thank you!

Looking to the future, the Chapter has its eye on membership growth, and the first step to promoting IREM® and the services we offer is to energize and educate our existing membership base.  Every CPM®, ARM® and ACoM® is a living example of IREM®’s dedication to ethics, education and elevated industry standards, so it is important that we recognize our leadership roles in the real estate management industry and promote our designations.  It is my intention to meet with every IREM Chapter 85 member during my term as President to discuss our membership benefits and recruit new members, so if you have not already received an email from me requesting a meeting, please expect one soon!

Another priority for the coming year is to expand our Chapter services and increase participation in other communities besides Bakersfield.  We plan to continue our successful IREM Young Professionals mixers, as well as offer additional Lunch & Learn seminars featuring experts in the fields of CAM Reconciliations, HVAC equipment, legal notices relating to residential and commercial tenancy, and others.  If you are interested in speaking on a topic, planning an event in your community, or have suggestions to improve our Lunch & Learn or IYP programs, please contact us at [email protected].

Coming up in the 1st quarter will be our 6th Annual Bakersfield Real Estate Forecast Breakfast on January 16th, 2018 at 7:00 AM.  Additional information and registration for this event can be found on our website at  This event is a significant fundraising vehicle for the Chapter, as well as an educational and networking opportunity.  Don’t miss it!

The 2018 schedule of Luncheons held at the Petroleum Club in Bakersfield will be released in the coming weeks, so keep checking our website and events page for further details.  If you would like to participate in planning an event, serving as a Board member, or have suggestions for future programs, please contact us ASAP!
