Spring 2017 President's Letter

Dear IREM Members, Colleagues and Supporters:

It is very refreshing to see the Kern River flowing through our city and wildflower blossoms in the foothills! A positive note from our rare wet winter!  The 1st Quarter has wrapped up and so far this year we have experienced many exciting programs and educational experience for our members and Industry Partners.

Our 5th Annual Bakersfield Real Estate Forecast Breakfast was a huge success surpassing our previous events with close to 400 people in attendance.  There was a good mix of local leaders, presenting relevant and useful information about our economy and real estate as we headed into 2017.  Our venue at the Downtown Marriott at the Convention Center served as a beautiful backdrop to our event.

Following our January event, A-C Electric gave us a preview into the solar industry and Jacqui Kitchen presented future plans for Bakersfield and the Downtown area.

I would like to thank all of our Industry Partners who have shown their support in our endeavors to creat a chapter that continues to present educational, informational programs, while making them fun, friendly and exciting.  We wouldn't be successful without their support.

This year, IREM no longer hosts the annual Leadership & Legislative Summit in Washington D.C..  In lieu of this event, each chapter is asked to conduct Congressional In-District programs with local legislators.  This year's issues for the briefings are 1031 like-kind exxchanges andsupporting ADA reform (H.R. 620).  If anyone is interested in attending the meetings please contact us via the website or email.

In is our pleasure to host our Regional Vice President, Mihelle Wong, CPM®, ARM® in April.  She will be the guest of honor at our annual Salute to Fair Housing, which is scheduled for Thursday, April 27th.  Once again, we will collaborate with the local IPAK (Income Property Association of Kern).  This year's presenters will be Debra Carlson the Senior Vice President of Public Affairs for the California Appartnemtn Association and Alan Peake, Real Estate Attorney.  Debra and Alan will share with us an array of fair housing updates and real estate matters that will affect our industry.  (PLEASE NOTE: THE CHANGE OF DAY FROM WEDNESDAY TO THURSDAY).

The evening of April 27th, the chapter will host an IREM Young Professionals (IYP) networking event at the Prarie Fire Patio, located on the 2nd floor of The Padre Hotel.  It will be a perfect time to relax, mingle, win prizes and listen to live music later in the evening.  This is a must attend event.

While all of us transition into Spring and Summer months, I am pleased to announce that Richard Chapman, President/CEO of Kern Economic Development Corporation (KEDC) will be presenting economic growth and opportunities in Kern County and how recent and future developments have affected our industry.

On the calendar for June is a panel presenting the trial and tribulations of hoarding, removal of toxic debris, animals and other nuisances on commercial and residential properties including itigating landlord's obligations to clean up and remove.

Lastly, please save the date for the 2018 6th Annual Bakersfield Real Estate Forecast Breakfast, which is scheduled for January 11, 2018 at the Marriott Downtown.

Kem Thurman, CPM®
